Using Props in the Classroom

There are three key elements that make our preschool dance program at 3-D Dance so successful:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

1. A developmentally appropriate curriculum with the needs of the developing child at the forefront of the program’s objectives.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

2. A classroom management plan developed by early childhood professionals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

3. The strategic use of props – which is what we will focus on in this blog post.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Props assist in creating a multi-sensory learning environment which facilitates critical brain connections in the young children. Anne Green Gilbert’s book, Brain Compatible Dance Education, where we derive our Brain Dance curriculum components from, explains, “A multi-sensory environment develops axons that are myelinated; therefore, they communicate more smoothly with one another. Neurons that fire together, wire together, creating stronger connections in the brain. The enriched environment is achieved through a challenging curriculum involving the visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile senses through problem solving, relevant projects, complex activities and critical thinking.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The benefits of creating a multi-sensory environment are endless through the power of props! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Props allow children to visualize and solve problems, accomplish class goals, and assist with developing movement skills. Plus, they are fun and colorful and they help keep even our youngest dancers engaged.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
